A common problem with these are the cases fall apart eventually. If the case doesn't close completely, the PS2 won't work at all. They can be replaced very easily. First, remove the screw covers by prying gently, notice you only remove the rubber feet at the back. Remove the screws with a #1 Philips screwdriver. Open it carefully, one side might take a little extra effort, but it will come apart.

How To Open And Repair Playstation 2 Slim V12

Inside of the top case. Circled in yellow is the disc brake. Circled in red is the door release
mechanism. If you replace the case and you have the SPU 3170 laser, you will need to cut the
plastic circled in blue. This is real easy with an inexpensive pair of tin snips.
Circled on left is the fan, make sure it's working And try to get the dust out of it with a small brush.
Photo on right shows the screw that holds everything in the case.
That's the laser gear on the left held in by just one screw. The photo on the right shows the screw
that holds everything in the case.
The photo on the left shows the metal cover on the board after the board is removed. The photo on
the right shows the DC power jack. If you have to move the power plug around in the jack to get it to
work, the solder joints are probably cracked. You will need to heat the leads on the jack with a
soldering iron after you remove the metal shield.
If you need to remove the laser, you will need to remove the screws holding the metal rod shown on
upper left. The photos on the upper right and lower left shows the plastic retainers underneath the
metal rod. The retainer on the upper right is backwards in the photo, the edge of the retainer should be
towards the center of the PS2. The whole laser assembly is shown on the lower right, it's held in by
the 4 screws in the rubber grommets.
The photo on the left shows the bottom of the laser, notice the brown clip that has to be lifted to
remove the cable. Photo in center shows the protective anti-static solder bead that protects the
laser during shipping and storage. If you install a new laser, always check to make sure it's
removed as shown in photo on right.
You can test the PS2 with the case open as long as you hold the interlock switches. The photo on the
upper left shows the rear case interlock switch, the PS2 won't work without this switch being closed.
The photo on the upper right shows the interlock switch being held down with a plastic pen. The photo
on the lower left shows the front interlock switch, you will have to hold this down with your finger for
the PS2 to work as shown on lower right. The PS2 runs off low voltages that won't harm you if touched.
You should always check your PS2 with the case open, that way if it works with the case open and not
with the case closed, you will know there is something wrong with the case.
