First, you'll need a few tools. Philips screwdrivers come in different sizes. You'll need a #2 Philips and a #00 Philips screwdriver. A small flat head screwdriver (Pocket screwdriver) is good to have. An acid brush, for dusting, (Available on this site.) is an absolute must, they're small with metal handles, we use them all the time.

Remove the screws hidden under the plastic covers and rubber feet with a #2 Philips screwdriver. You may have eight screws or ten. You will also have to remove or cut the warranty label from the back.
There are 2 or 4 screws holding the cover on the DVD drive, remove with a #00 Philips screwdriver. Notice on this model, the cable is taped to the top of the DVD drive. Before you re-assemble it, tape the cable back where it was with cellophane tape or you may end up with a screw through your cable. Remove the 2 screws in the photo on the right. Lift the left side of the tray and pull it out.
If you need to replace the laser or laser gear, just remove the one steel rod on the right with a #00 screwdriver, and the whole laser will pull out. On newer versions, there is no screw, you just pry out the silver colored clip at the top that holds the rod down. The laser gear is held in by just one screw. When you put it back together, the holes on the white laser height adjustment wheels should be at the 11:00 position. You may need to adjust these 3 clicks at a time to get it reading all media.
