TIP: We highly recommend a good low wattage soldering iron and soldering flux. Solder flux can't be found at Radio Slack, you will have to go to an electronics parts dealer. We like the liquid type, just brush a little on right before you solder and it makes all the difference.
TIP: Most of the time, a laser that doesn't read just needs to be cleaned with a Q-tip and alcohol. Plain old 70 or 80% rubbing alcohol is fine. The laser does not have to be removed, just dip the Q-tip in alcohol and gently rub the laser lens. Immediately after, use the dry end of the Q-tip to polish the lens by spinning it between your fingers. With the naked eye, a laser lens will look clean, but it won't read, always clean it first. If cleaning don't help, read on.

Check the laser loop as shown above. This is a photo of a section of the motherboard. If you don't want to go through all that to check the loop, you don't have to. The loop is the most likely to fail, anyway.

Here's the bottom of the laser. The cable connector is circled in red, the little black pieces in the corner slide up away from the laser to release the cable. Remove the screw circled in green. The adjustment pots, (potentiometers), are circled in blue just for the record, we won't mess with these. The green board is the laser rebuild cable.

The top of the laser. That's the lens that you already tried cleaning, right in the center. Circled in green are the clips to release the top cover. Insert a small tool, (a jeweler's screwdriver works great), and gently pry these away from the center while pulling up.

The photo above shows the loop mounted to the laser. Remove the screw that's circled.

These 4 solder joints attach the loop to the laser rebuild cable. Desolder them with a low watt soldering iron and a little braid. The loop can be removed now. Working with these 4 joints isn't too bad, try the loop first, if you need to replace the laser rebuild cable, the soldering is going to be a little more difficult. Read on.

Here are the solder connections on the other side. Once you remove these, the laser cable is free. These attach directly to the laser chip. There are 16 of them and they are very small. That's all, just put it back together, using solder flux, and you're ready.

IMPORTANT !!! When you install a laser, make sure the cable is on top of the little black latch. The cable will slide in just fine under the latch, but you'll never get that little latch to close and it won't work.
